About TNAU

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) had its genesis from establishment of an agricultural school at Madras, Tamil Nadu, India, as early as 1868 and it was later relocated to Coimbatore.

The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) is a state agricultural university located in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. It is dedicated to agriculture related education, research and extension. The university has 13 constituent colleges and 32 research stations spread across Tamil Nadu.

TNAU's mission is to promote education, research and extension in agriculture and allied sciences to achieve sustainable agricultural development and improve the quality of life of the farming community. The university is accredited by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) with a grade of 4.0 on a 4.0 point scale.

Research & Innovation

TNAU is at the forefront of agricultural research with 32 research stations and over 42 research centers across Tamil Nadu.

Key Research Areas

Developing high-yielding, climate-resilient crop varieties through conventional breeding and biotechnological approaches. TNAU has released over 680 crop varieties including paddy, millets, pulses, oilseeds, cotton, and sugarcane.

Recent achievements include drought-tolerant rice varieties, biofortified millets with higher iron and zinc content, and disease-resistant cotton varieties.

Research on soil health management, water conservation, precision farming, and climate-smart agriculture. Development of water-saving technologies like drip and sprinkler irrigation systems tailored for smallholder farmers.

The university has pioneered the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) in Tamil Nadu, increasing yields by 20-30% while reducing water usage by 30-40%.

Design and development of farm machinery, post-harvest technologies, renewable energy applications in agriculture, and precision farming tools. TNAU has developed over 50 farm implements suitable for small and marginal farmers.

Recent innovations include solar-powered irrigation systems, low-cost grain dryers, and mobile apps for pest and disease diagnosis.
